Lalalalala Kanna's PISSED. You know, she likes a little more...structure than this XD
I think she's justified, but eh? That's just me ;)

The Q & A, hey!

Marcel edit delete reply 3rd Sep 2021, 10:21 PM
Ok, two things.
First, I checked out Ecosia Awesome! Thank you! I'm going to mention it in the "Good Things That Happened To You Today" thread.
Second, I'm wondering about the symbolism In panel 4. I did one in NRoS of a character breaking the 4th wall. This effect would have worked better for that. I see how she's "snapped" emotionally here. What I'm wondering is if that's original or a Manga/Anime icon. I see things like that on comics here that I never saw in the stuff I read as a kid, like the box with inverted corners to express anger or annoyance. Just wondering!

I don’t know if BlueDragon has any better perspective on this, but I haven’t really seen effects like that too commonly in manga. At least the glass breaking thing. I feel like that is probably more akin to cinema with people breaking mirrors when they feel like they’re broken in some way. Comics do draw a lot from cinema as well, that’s why I bring that up. Now, for the inverted corner dialogue boxes, yeah that’s a lot more common in manga, but I feel like I was doing that myself a lot when I was young and I barely read any comics back then. But, then again, maybe I was still unconsciously taking in methods from the stuff I had read. I don’t know. But that’s my perspective on stuff.

Isn't Ecosia great!? The tree planting initiative is why I joined, the image search option is why I stayed (it's like old Google).

About the 4th panel: phew! I'm glad people are getting the point XD I am sure a lot of this was manga inspired, but I think the first inkling I saw of this was here on CF. Like Jmluvsbob says, I haven't seen this so much in professional manga I've read, but I may have seen it in some anime occasionally (probably Tenchi Muyo XD XD).

I used to read Shiro & Kuro (sadly, the writer has left D:), and she used a comic making program that was clearly created in Japan/anime/manga inspired. She had a few panels that would look like shattered glass as comedic relief when a character was heart broken (in a funny way). So I think that's where I first saw it...

The Devil of Angel Classroom (no longer hosted here), the author also uses some sort of manga program, and I can't recall if GeeTee used that idea, but I have a feeling he did, because when I was sketching this page I thought "I want to do an effect that's a little literal showing her crack" XD But I wasn't sure how to do that, since I don't have a program like theirs. Maybe he didn't use it, but there were a lot of interesting effects he had access to that I found were good visual tools.

I found this video online, and the dude has a downloadable broken glass image: Vidja. I was going to follow the whole tutorial, but I kinda liked how it looked without using clipping masks (ugh, I need to learn this, though). So I ended up just deleting the white parts and using the shatter.

@Jmluvsbob: Yeah, I'd agree I haven't seen it a lot in manga. I know I've seen it in some anime, but I can't remember what or where XD It's probably something really old like Slayers or you know, the ones that get a bit silly sometimes.

I know I'll know what you're all talking about with the inverted corner dialog, but I am drawing a blank: can someone show me an example? I dunno why I can't picture this XD XD

I believe he’s talking about the cross-popping angry vein thing. Just put “cross-popping vein” in google and it will pop up. Not having good luck copying and pasting image links at the moment.

Here's a cross popping vein found with Ecosia.
BlueDragon edit delete reply 4th Sep 2021, 4:45 PM
Oh! Okay! Yeah, I use that all the time (when I first saw those, I just thought "how perfect is this to express blood pumping anger XD XD) I never knew the name for them, I just new they were veins XD XD

I'm so slow, eh?

Thank you both!

Uh oh. Kanna, um, you’re getting a little bit…Keisuma-ey. But I get it. I’d be frustrated as well.
BlueDragon edit delete reply 4th Sep 2021, 1:57 PM
Yes!! I'm so glad you caught that. I want to make it evident that all this is grating on her, even if they don't show it all the time. least in my own experience, when I'm about to lose it, I'm usually pretty cool on the exterior..then something will just push me over the edge XD XD You can almost feel that breaking point sometimes XD

And then other times, it just creeps slowly I'm like "huh, well this has been a long time coming." XD XD

I thought they were reading survival books exactly for this reason, lmao.
A couple of them have something like "calmly analyze the situation" :D
BlueDragon edit delete reply 5th Sep 2021, 2:03 PM
XD Right!? Kanna's rightfully angry, but she does need to chill. It's not like Shimi couldn't teleport them, if she was pressured to do so XD
